Weight Watchers success stories

Sara K./Marcie M./Alyssa Z.

Weight Watchers is consistently ranked as one of the most popular—and effective—diets out there by U.S. News & World Report. And it's not just because Oprah loves it. (Although that can't hurt!) Experts praise the diet for being easy to follow, nutritionally sound, and reasonable, while dieters love it for the group support and accountability.

And if there's one thing they all agree on, it's that it works: Participants lose an average of six pounds in the first four weeks and while that may sound slower than the "30 pounds in 30 days" diets you often see advertised, people continue to lose weight and keep it off on this plan. According to a recent study published inCirculation, Weight Watchers "consistently demonstrated greater efficacy at reducing weight at 12 months" compared to other plans.

And then there's Oprah. It's hard to talk about Weight Watchers without invoking her name as she's the diet's most vocal fan. The media mogul has so much confidence in Weight Watchers that she recently became one of the company's biggest investors.

But Oprah, studies, and expert opinions only mean so much. When it comes down to choosing a diet that fits your goals and lifestyle, sometimes it's best to hear from the women doing it themselves. Here's how counting the points, hitting the gym, and going to the weekly meetings paid off for these women.

"In July of last year, I decided it was time to lose weight. I chose Weight Watchers because no food is off limits. You are able to eat anything you want in moderation. It really taught me how to portion food and what foods are really worth eating. For instance, the Smart Points program assigns more points to high-fat or junk foods and lower points to things like meat and veggies so I naturally choose more of the healthier options. I also love Connect, a feature of the Weight Watchers app that is sort of like diet Facebook. You can read other people's successes and challenges, and like and comment on photos and posts. I love being able to go on there to get tips or be inspired by other people's transformations. And now I get to share my own! I've lost 71 pounds exactly in 15 months." —Kelley U., Lakeville, MN

"Weight Watchers has been a lifesaver for me. I started in January 2016 and am still doing the program today. I love it because of how flexible the Smart Points system is. I am able to eat essentially anything I want, but may just have to limit my portion size or reduce daily points in other places. There are days when I want a cookie, or a burger, and I'm allowed to have it. I've learned to accept that it's okay to indulge sometimes and I should not feel guilty about it, as long as so I've tracked it. Plus, the sense of community is super helpful. I am a meeting person, and feel that sitting in front of a group of people every week is beneficial and holds me accountable and encourages me to keep going. I'm down 103 pounds in 15 months!" —Sara K., Brooklyn, NY

"I love treats! So being able to lose weight while still eating fun foods was what originally sold me on Weight Watchers. I started the program in July 2015 and learned the trick was that I could still have ice cream if I really wanted it, but then I would focus the rest of the day on fresh vegetables and fruit and lean protein to balance it out, or work out to get extra activity points. I also rediscovered my love of running and now I'm a marathoner. For me, the accountability Weight Watchers provides has been the most critical in helping me stay on track. I lost 60 pounds in 17 months. I stopped attending when I got pregnant with my son who was born in August of this year, but the program worked so well for me that I just joined again when he was five weeks old to help me lose the baby weight. I've been back on the program for three weeks and am already seeing results." —Ashley W., Greenville, SC

"I started Weight Watchers in 2014 and did it actively for about a year, during which time I lost 90 pounds. I chose it primarily because I'd heard good things about it over the years and I liked the thought of going to meetings with other people who had the same health goals. My favorite thing about the program is that you don't have to totally give up anything to lose weight. When I need that piece of chocolate, I can have it! I just have to track it, account for it, and make a better choice somewhere else. Getting stuck in a deprivation mindset can really hurt weight-loss goals. I can only deny something for so long before I end up bingeing on it. Weight Watchers is about a lifestyle change and life-long better choices, not depriving yourself in the short term to get to a certain weight only to end up gaining it all back in the long run." —Amanda T., Covington, GA

"When I first tried Weight Watchers I just did the online program. That worked for a while but I discovered that as I've gotten older the weight is harder to to get off and keep it off. So in May of 2014, I started regular Weight Watchers and attending meetings. I found the support and weekly weigh-in to be really helpful but the best part was the lack of judgement. There is no shaming over weight! Weight will fluctuate and they make sure that's included in the program. I lost 23 pounds in six months. I had to keep it off for six weeks to become a Lifetime Member—not only did I do that but I've kept it off ever since. I'm still a proud lifetime member and I still go to meetings every week." —Alyssa Z., Millbrae, CA

Marcie M. before and after Weight Watchers

"I love Weight Watchers. I lost 59 pounds in 18 months with them and liked it so much I now work for them. I really enjoy the focus on real food versus processed 'diet' food. I was able to learn how to incorporate special treats (birthday cake, movie theater popcorn, cookies, ice cream, etc) into a healthy diet and not feel guilty about it. The program also taught me that it's okay to say no to food if you really don't want it. It's not that I can't have certain items, I just choose not to. It gave me some control over my choices. I started online and they have a social media platform for support. Once I got closer to my goal, I switched to meetings. The support was amazing and helped me push through plateaus. But mainly it's not a diet but a lifestyle change." —Marcie M., Orting, WA

Pam G. before and after Weight Watchers

"I'm a Weight Watchers veteran. I have lost a significant amount of weight more than once using the program and kept it off for more than two years each time. Unfortunately, a few years ago I went through some pretty traumatic stuff—think crazy stalker ex-boyfriend and my mom dying—and went off the program and gained the weight back. But instead of seeing it as a failure (life happens!), in June I decided to get back on the program because I know it works for me. I really like the new points plan they are using. I feel that Weight Watchers is truly a healthy-eating lifestyle change. You eat regular food, mostly fruits, vegetables, and proteins. They encourage exercise but it's not required. I also love the support system that comes with it. It took me a while to find a group and a coach I really like but I'm so glad I did as they've made all the difference. In the past four months I've lost over 15 pounds and am feeling great." —Pam G., Arvada, CO
